“I didn’t know where to turn for help”

When Janet Adams was diagnosed with cancer she didn’t know where to turn for help until she met Dr Sue.

Janet was at a Terrible Titties Breast Cancer Support Group at Stafford Rugby Club, when Dr Sue was giving a talk about the variety of services at our charity.

And, after attending one of our Menopause Café sessions, Janet was later referred to our counselling service and Lymphoedema Clinic in our Therapy & Wellbeing Centre.

 

“Your counselling sessions have been a big help”

The 53-year-old went through a traumatic time after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

But she says the counselling sessions have been a great help.

“Katharine House Hospice is somewhere I can go to talk about my fears and not be judged,” said Janet.

“I have had a hard time personally and the charity and its staff have been brilliant.

“Dr Sue even takes the time to call me at home to see how I am getting on.”

 

Our hospice is not all about death or dying

Our Therapy and Wellbeing Centre offers a drop-in service for people with a palliative diagnosis as well as their loved ones.

But we also offer support and social activities, complementary therapy treatments and other holistic therapies.

Lisa Taylor, our Deputy Chief Executive, says when people hear the word hospice they sometimes put the shutters down.

“We want people to know a hospice is not all about death or dying,” she said.

“One of the biggest things we hear is: ‘The hospice is not what I was expecting’ or ‘it’s not clinical’.

“And we also hear ‘it doesn’t smell like a hospital’ and ‘we can hear laughing’.

 

“We are here from the day of diagnosis”

“But we are all about making patients feel comfortable, we pride ourselves on being here for people right from diagnosis, not just at the end of life.

“And we are here for those who need us.”
